Off to the airport!!

This is it finally!! No really it came so quickly. I am off to a nice dinner with my husband and oldest son. (my youngest son is at outdoor camp we said goodbye this morning!) Then to the airport. I weighed my suitcases and they are both barely under 50lbs. So that makes a grand total of over 200 pounds of "stuff" that I am bringing to Mrs. America (100 pounds was sent UPS) Seriously I need it all....

I am so excited the butterflies are kicking in! Yesterday flew by but I had all day today to get my nails done, pick up a few last minute things and then pack. I came home to a nice surprise yesterday, my parents stopped by and left me a box of Love! It was an adorable gift box with a special necklace inside, it was a heart with a mustard seed in it. I am taking it with me on my trip. This has always been a special gift that my mom cherishes. Here is why:

Matthew 17:20 He said to them, Because of the littleness of your faith [that is, your lack of firmly relying trust]. For truly I say to you, if you have faith [ that is living] like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, Move from here to yonder place, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.AMP

Mustard seeds appear several times in the Bible, and most of them are found in the parables. They symbolize God’s kingdom and faith, small beginnings and change.

Mustard seed necklaces remind Christians of the power of faith. A very small amount of faith, even as small as a grain of mustard seed, can move mountains. And that little faith is more than enough to make a person deserving of God’s Kingdom.

Mustard seeds can also remind Christians of small and humble beginnings. A small, invisible and immaterial seed can grow up to a huge tree that can grow up to as tall as fifteen feet. And that mean small opportunities, talents and skills can grow into something very major is proper nurturing is given.

Mustard seeds can also symbolize change. The mustard tree was once called “the one with dangerous takeover properties” because the mustard seeds grow very quickly and easily in the wild. Now, however, the mustard tree is considered a valuable source of nourishment, a pleasant provider of shelter for travelers and a place for birds to live and nest their young. Something that was considered impure can change for the better and become useful and kind.

Getting Ready for Mrs. America part oh my gosh I leave tomorrow!

The fabulous sewing team Atelie Couture!
Beth Kovacevich Mrs. Washington 1996 and I having a farewell lunch!
Last chance workout with my trainer Lee R. Ramos
Valerie from the International Academy of Design & Technology sewing
the last bits of bling on my gown!

What a day!!! I took my son to school with all of his camping gear, he is going to outdoor camp CISPUS tomorrow and Thursday night. It's going to be a wet event as usual!

Next I headed up to Tukwilla to pick up my gown and my custom cocktail dress. We tried them on did a few last tucks here and there. They still wanted to add more stones and beading in a few spots. I have no idea how many thousands of beads and stones are on this gown. They are all hand sewn in place. It is amazing.

I left my gowns there to be finished and headed over to Bellevue to meet with my trainer for one last workout and to go over my training routine for while I am at the Greenbrier. Lee is a very good teacher and had me go through the motions and write it all down.

After that I met with Beautiful Beth Kovacevich Mrs. Washington 1996 for a farewell luncheon. She gave me some beautiful glitzy crown earrings that I LOVE!!! We talked all about Mrs. America and what it was like when she went. Times sure have changed she said she remembers writing addresses and numbers down on little pieces of paper! No emails or texting back then. Wow times have changed. She is so excited for me and reminded me this will be the best experience I can ever have and the friends I make will be forever! How exciting I am so looking forward to meeting all these women.

After my lunch date I headed back to Tukwilla to get my gowns and have one last photo and farewell with the Atelie Couture ladies. I made a few returns at the stores up there and headed home. Construction slowed me down and took me longer to get home then I planned.

At home the house was full of kids and my sons band mates came over to practice. They will be performing in a school assembly while I am gone. I baked a batch of cookies for everyone made some food for them and then got caught up on emails. WHEW!! The day is gone.

I have all day tomorrow to finish packing and get ready to go. I am so excited. I will be meeting up with Mrs. Idaho at the airport but taking a different flight then meeting up with her again in Atlanta to fly into Lewisburg together.

Getting Ready for Mrs. America part 5

Don on Base Scott on Lead Guitar and Vocals
Mike on Rythm Guitar and Vocals
Me on Vocals and Rythm Instruments My husband Allen behind me on the drums! My last day of no makeup, hat hair, jeans and a sweatshirt!

I finished the rest of my pageant gifts today! Plus made a few extras just in case! Got some gifts put away and things organized. Gathered some things to pack but didn't get anything really packed yet. Sorted all my vitamins out for 2 weeks worth. I started taking several supplements recommended by my trainer and since I have been taking them I have not gotten sick in 8 weeks! I want to keep that going. I use a pill sorter box that makes it really easy to keep track of what to take when. I bought an extra one so I can have the whole two weeks worth.

I ran some errands, did some laundry and took care of some unfinished business!! Now I am off to one last practice with my band. We have a performance the weekend after I get back. I'll have to make sure to get some singing time in during my Mrs. America trip, I hope my roommate doesn't mind! By the way my roommate is Mrs. District of Columbia! We've exchanged a few emails and found out we both own our own businesses and have 2 boys. I am sure after 2 weeks together we will know a lot more about each other!!

I exchanged some email with Mrs. Idaho Kristie Bear and found out we will be on the same flights into Lewisburg!! That makes me extremely happy. The trip is going to be 13 hours 3 different planes and a couple of layovers Ugh! I loaded several movies in my computer to occupy my mind, I am hoping to sleep.

Getting Ready for Mrs. America part 4

Pink Luggage
State Costume Willow Gold Finch
Delegate gifts in process

Okay where did the time go today?? I did sleep in but only till 8:00am. Today my family stopped by to say farewell before I head out to West Virginia. One of my tasks today was to fix the tail on my Gold Finch costume so that it stays in place while on stage. It gave me a chance to put the whole ensemble on so they could see it. They loved it! It really is amazing when you see it in person. Pam Curnel my state director designed and constructed it. There are rhinestones, sequins and so many feathers!! I love to dress up and wear costumes so this is way too much fun for me. I feel like a Vegas show girl!

My family is so wonderful. They are so excited for me and have been such great cheerleaders. I am glad we got some time to visit and get a few more hugs in. My parents will be staying with our boys a few nights while we are gone, I am so grateful for their help.

I started getting out my suitcases, these are my favorite ones that were a Christmas present from my husband several years ago. They are Barbie pink and so durable, they have been so many places. Every time I am at the airport someone always comments "I bet those don't get lost", and I always say "Yes they do!" I have suffered the lost luggage dilemma a few times, I hope this trip that won't happen! One of the locks on my big suitcase was not working, my solution was to hammer it until it did. I am pretty handy with tools, I do build my own trade show booths after all, but I am not so careful or patient sometimes. When something doesn't work right I can usually beat into working! My husband heard the pounding and came to my rescue. He is very patient and takes the time to figure things out properly. So thanks to him we got the locks fixed. I am so happy it just wouldn't be the same traveling without my Barbie suitcases!!

Finally, I worked on finishing up my gifts for the other 50 Mrs. America delegates. I had more work to do then I realized. I got through with 25 of them and saved the rest for tomorrow. It takes me about 45 minutes from start to finish to make each gift. I got started on them last month before I even won! I figured if I won I could use them and if not I would give them to whomever did win. I am glad we got snowed in last month, being trapped at home gave me the time to create them.

Mrs. America Send off Party

What a day yesterday!! I started out getting up at 4:45am drove an hour and a half to my trainer in Bellevue, worked out for 2 hours (woke up today sore!), drove another 30 minutes to my tailor did fittings for an hour, drove another 45 minutes to a spa had some necessary treatments taken care of, didn't have to drive for this but my makeup/hairstylist came to me to do hair and makeup for a few hours (she took her time it's not like it took that long to make me look decent!) drove another 30 minutes back to Bellevue for my send of party!

It was a great get together! With all of this happening in only 2 weeks there was short notice so for those who could make it I appreciate it! I had many people with me in spirit, I know you already had commitments but thanks for sending your love! I was showered with love and gifts and a yummy cake (I have a sugar hangover I am trying to recover from today!) It is such a great feeling to know I have such wonderful supporters here in Washington!!
I brought one of my pageant gifts for the delegates to show everyone. I did a drawing for someone to win the gift and my dear friend Christine was the winner!

After the party I met with my director to go over my state costume. I LOVE this costume! It is glamorous and showy and oooh la la!! It is a Willow Gold Finch our Washington State Bird, although I've never seen a sparkly bird like this!! My boys were confused when I showed them the costume, they didn't know why a Gold FISH would have feathers!! Yep, that's right they thought I was going to be a gold fish!! Awww boys you gotta love them.

It was a crazy, busy wonderful day! Thank you again everyone for the gifts and the Love!!

Getting Ready for Mrs. America part 3

Tonight my husband Allen and I went to our local Dinners Done Right to make some dinners that can be frozen and cooked later while I am gone at Mrs. America. I let him choose the meals, of course he picked not only the ones that he and the boys would like best but also the easiest ones to prepare later! Allen is not much of a cook, well all he really cooks is oatmeal, bacon and french toast and I don't think that would be good for 2 weeks straight!

Allen's mom is an excellent cook and already plans to have them over to eat and will make plenty of left overs to take home. Between her and the frozen meals plus a few nights out to eat, I think they will survive!! I on the other hand get 2 weeks of no cooking or cleaning!

Getting Ready for Mrs. America part 2

I leave in one week from today for West Virginia!! I spent the last 3 days sorting out my clothes, working on pageant gifts and organizing what I will need during my 2 week stay. My husband got excited when he saw the big pile of clothes, he thought it was my "get rid of" pile!! We are always going through our clothes and weeding out what we do not need and then pass them along to someone else. I seem to have more things than he does, maybe because I'm a girl!!

I packed 2 large boxes weighing 43 and 53 pounds! They will be lighter coming home because there are gifts and some consumables in there too. I just couldn't decide which clothes to bring so I just brought most of them! I hope my roommate will not mind! We have not gotten our roommate assignments yet. I can't wait to find out who I will be spending time with in a room for 2 weeks!! I grew up sharing rooms with sisters so this is no problem for me.

This morning I went in for a fitting to my sponsor Irina with Atelie Couture. They are altering my evening gown and making me two cocktail dresses from scratch! They measure me, create the pattern and sew it! They are amazing. The pretty blue dress is made of this amazing one of a kind material with detailed embroidering and beading. I love it. The black one is lightweight and so comfortable. It reminds me of a dress from Paris so couture!! I had Irina meet me over at DSW to find the perfect shoes to go with it. I also found some fabulous gold glitter shoes to go with my state costume I got the other day. DSW found out I was Mrs. Washington and gave me a 20% discount off my purchase. They did this for all of the Miss America contestants and wanted to extend that to the Mrs.!!

After I got home I had to ship those boxes out so I headed over to my local UPS counter with my favorite UPS lady! I have been shipping with UPS for years for my business, now that I have UPS pickup our packages I don't get in often to see the ladies! I thought it would be fun to surprise her with my crown and sash.

Jilladair goodie box!!

My wonderful sponsor Jilladair sent me a box full of so much wonderful makeup!! It was like Christmas!!! She will be coming to Mrs. America to do my makeup and hair during the second week at Mrs. America. Her makeup line is vegan and has no nasty by- products in it. I love the way it makes my face look and it has amazing staying power. She also put in some goodies for the Mrs. America delegates too!!!

Mrs. Washington Pageant Practice 3/6

Today was our last practice before we all head to Moses Lake this Saturday for the pageant! Carla Richards Mrs. Washington 2010 graciously organized and led it for us. The Lakewood YMCA donated the practice room that was perfect to use, lots of room and mirrors to watch what we were doing. We worked on our opening number and our bathing suit walk. The music is so awesome this year it is going to be a fabulous program.

My Son Cameron and his girlfriend Klesey came to help out. Cameron was in charge of doing our voice recordings for the evening gown portion. He is so talented with audio video equipment I knew I could rely on his expertise. He got a little hungry after working so hard so he left to get a snack... well he shows back up with a box of doughnuts!! Seriously he brings a box of doughnuts to a pageant practice!! We had fun taking some pictures with his doughnuts. Mrs. Washington 2010 does not have to worry about being on stage in a bathing suit so she enjoyed a doughnut for us!!

BLE Carnival

Yesterday my son and I were back at Black Lake Elementary volunteering for the annual carnival. This event is something the kids and families look forward to every year. It is a very big source of revenue sponsored by our PTA. The great thing about BLE is we always have lots of volunteers who are willing to help and give their time.

Tickets were sold to everyone and then they used the tickets for playing games, food or other fun activities. When they wone games they would get a different ticket back. These tickets could then be turned in for prizes. Jordan and I manned the Nemo Bean Bag toss game. This was harder than it looked but we gave them lots of chances and let them move closer so they had a better chance getting the bags through the holes. We were so busy we didn't have time to take any photos!

BLE Spaghetti Feed for World Vision & Food Bank

The annual Black Lake Elementary Spaghetti Feed is a tradition for the 6th graders. They were going to use the money raised this year for their space camp that is coming up in a few weeks, however due to our fabulous Christmas wreath sale we already had enough funds. Therefore, they decide to focus on helping others. Students were totally in charge of this event! They cooked, provided entertainment, bussed the tables, were the servers, hostess/hosts, clean up crew, etc. Very few parents were needed to help but a few of us were there doing our part. I was so impressed with how well everything went. These 6th graders were so responsible and took this seriously. My son Jordan was a server, he wore a suit but by the end of the evening he shed the tie and jacket! I was a server in the kitchen, I helped oversee the spaghetti scoopers! I had to get my gloved hand in there and scoop some spaghetti & pass plates but really these kids kept things moving so well, it was easy.

The monetary donations were about $500!! Plus lots of food for our local food bank. The money raised will go directly toward helping Pakistan through World Vision, six months after devastating floods, the needs are still great.

Peter G. Schmidt Elementary with Music Teacher Mrs. Williams

What a funtastic day I had at Peter G. Elementary! This is the last school I will be visiting for Music In Our Schools Month. I met Mrs. Williams and her 6th grade classes when they performed at the Tumwater Youth Program hosted Tree Lighting event. I was the MC for the event inside the fire station where several choirs performed. It was a great opportunity for our community to see music education in action. It also gave me a great opportunity to share with them the importance of music education and how they can be advocates for it.

Mrs. Williams is one of those teachers that everybody loves!! She is full of life and energy. The music she picks for the kids to sing is fun and lively. She also teaches them movements as well so when they perform it is very fun to watch. The 6th graders performed Don't Stop Believin while we waited for the parade to start. Yes that's right a crazy hat parade! Today the entire school and staff were celebrating Dr. Suess's Birthday by wearing silly hats. The entire school participates in a parade that winds through all the class rooms. I wore my crazy hat...my tiara and joined in on the fun. This school knows how to have a good time!!

I started out the day with Mrs. Peirce's 2nd grade class. After sharing my message about the importance of music education the students performed a few of their Cinco De Mayo songs they are practicing for an upcoming performance.

Miss Clayton's 5th grade class and Mrs. Center's 3rd grade class spent the whole time talking with me about Music Education and lots of questions about the pageant.

Mr. Colgan's 4th grade class played their recorders for me. 3 songs that they will be playing for their parents at an upcoming concert. They sounded amazing and I could tell they had been practicing!

The last class of the day Mrs. Knutzen's 1st grade were wiggly and a very active group, after all it was the end of crazy hat day who wouldn't be wiggly!! After we talked about Music Education they sang a few farm songs for their upcoming "Moosical"

I had so much fun at Peter G. It's the only school that had a parade while I was there!! Mrs. Williams is a wonderful and talented teacher and I am grateful for people like her who inspire our children to be creative and express themselves.

Lacey Elementary School Mrs. Kelley

What a great way to start of March with Music In Our Schools Month by visiting Lacey Elementary. Mrs. Kelley is the fabulous music teacher at this school, and I got to spend the day with her. Her classroom is full of all kinds of instruments and fun information. You can't help but feel the music in the air in this classroom! Mrs. Kelley is very talented and can play many different instruments to accompany her students. She also directs a 4th, 5th and 6th grade choir early in the morning. The choir came in during the 1st grade class to sing a few songs. They were awesome!

I was given the chance to share with each class the importance of music education, what opportunities there are available to them and what types of jobs they could have someday in music. Each class had lots of input and great questions. I was asked lots of questions about the upcoming pageant as well.

One class got me to sing for them, I did the Birthday song by the Beattles. In another class I participated in a folk dance and a rythm clapping song, was that ever challenging. I even played a few other music games with the adpative learning class. It was another fun filled day in Music class!!

These are the classes I visited with today:

5th Grade Miss Penrose
4th Grade Mr. Tuttle
3rd Grade Mrs. Martins
Adapted Learning Mrs. Folks
1st Grade Mrs. Tamanaha
2nd Grade Mrs. Deming

March is Music In Our Schools Month!

March is Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM)...

and Music In Our Schools Month means advocacy!

Music programs nationwide are in danger. State and local legislators are attempting to make up for funding shortfalls in this difficult economy by cutting education budgets, and music programs are often the first to be considered. Advocacy takes place on many fronts, and advocates for music education need to learn to speak to different audiences, each of whom has a key contribution to make. Now’s the time to get involved and do your part to ensure that America’s students have access to a comprehensive, sequential music education taught by exemplary music educators!

March has been officially designated by MENC: The National Association for Music Education for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation. MIOSM began as a single statewide celebration in 1973, and has grown over the decades to encompass a day, then a week, and then in 1985 to become a month long celebration of school music. The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community and to display the benefits school music brings to students of all ages.

The celebration continues to grow each year, reaching more and more students, teachers, musicians, and music supporters. Schools and communities throughout the country and overseas celebrate MIOSM with concerts and other activities based on the year's theme. Classrooms, concert halls, civic buildings, clubs, parks, libraries, and shopping malls are just some of the arenas in which the public can observe the processes and results of music education.

MENC, representing more than 75,000 active, retired, and pre-service music teachers and 60,000 honor students and supporters, is the sponsor of MIOSM. In addition to announcing the theme for the year, the organization is responsible for communicating ideas to support state and local MIOSM celebrations, providing awareness items such as T-shirts, posters, and buttons, and coordinating programs such as the World's Largest Concert.

MENC's 52 federated state organizations (representing each state, the District of Columbia, and Europe) play an active role in the observance, securing governors' proclamations, enlisting the support of chief state school officers, and establishing organizational structures to help reach individual music educators. MIOSM chairpersons with each state organization provide the major thrust for the MIOSM celebrations, with the goal of involving students, administrators, parents, civic groups, and community members. Other national arts and education organizations also lend their endorsements and support to the programs through publications and events.

MIOSM and the events surrounding it are the ideal opportunities for increasing awareness of the benefits of high quality music education programs in our nation's schools. MENC hopes that teachers, students, and music supporters alike will find ways to join in on the celebration through creative activities and advocacy. Learn more about how MENC works to support music education, and visit MusicFriends to join other advocates working to insure that music is part of a well-rounded education for all children.
